A Mammoth Dream

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

I don't remember learning to ski. I've seen pictures. In fact my parents have a clipping from a local Washington State newspaper with a snapshot of me skiing in between my dad's skis on opening day.

But my first day ever skiing, at a young age of 2 1/2 years old, was at Mammoth Mountain. Years of lessons, ski trips with friends and family, epic adventures we recall year after year - it's all a living history.

I moved back to Southern California as a teenager and again my family began their treks up to Mammoth for winter skiing. It was in those years that I fell in love with a dream to one day have my own home here.

Years later, I began having children of my own. Three energetic, fun, spirited boys who took to the slopes so naturally and enthusiastically. When they were still quite young we began coming to Mammoth Lakes in the summer and fell even deeper in love with the region. I then began my searching and scheming, following the real estate like a student, learning all I could.

Until finally, the time came when the boys were teenagers and trips were often and the hours searching for rentals and the frustrations with rentals were long, that we decided to find a Mammoth home of our own.

Enter Jana Carter, real estate agent extraordinaire (and full-disclosure, loving sister-in-law) who got us in touch with Vanessa Oelke of Mammoth Realty Group who saved the day! She was a dream to work with and helped us find our perfect match -- a 3 bed/3 bath condo just steps away from Canyon Lodge at Mammoth Mountain. The decor wasn't quite our style but the bones were good and was move-in ready. Which has left more time for the fun parts, reimagining all that "Sylvee Bear" could be. Where did we get that name from? Aside from the similarity to the condo complex Silver Bear, Sylvie Bear is the name given to the print by the artist that adorns the entrance to our home. There sits Sylvee Bear, ready to greet and welcome you, warmly and lovingly, as we share our home with you.

Our first weekend visiting our vacation home. Excuse the wardrobe, we were working all weekend (not that you would get that from the robe)!
